2003 Maleta Vineyard Meritage
Always eagerly awaited, the Meritage inevitably sells out far too soon for its enthusiastic followers. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with long term aging in French and American oak barrels, this is a full-bodied red that rewards long-term aging.
The nose is intense and jammy, indicating well ripened fruit. It reveals oaky scents of cedar, tar, pencil lead and coffee.
Although very young, all indications are there for great things to come. Enjoy its full, rich mouthfeel and youthful tannins. Leave it in the glass or decant the bottle to allow the concentrated cassis fruit to emerge along with hints of raisins, tobacco, coffee and chocolate.
The Meritage cries out for a nice rare steak, prime rib, a pink tinged duck magret or rack of lamb.
Drink now with decanting or hold until 2014.
